Introduction

The way we see entertainment, gaming and even advertising has revolutionized; thanks to 3D animation. It certainly bolsters the suspension of disbelief, allowing for an overall more engaging viewing experience where double lives and whole worlds feel that much more vivid. This begs the question: how can 3D animation come alive? So, join me in exploring how 3D animation created from idea to final image

Steps on how 3D animation is created

Concept & Storyboarding

3D animationAs the name suggests, a 3-dimensional world (virtually) is created for any character or scenario to live its life! People in this beginning stage of pre-production brainstorm ideas, create a storyline and outline the storyboard. Storyboard: A sequential representation of what happens in the animation, broken down into scenes & actions.

Key Steps:

Brainstorming: Imaginations run wild and new characters, settings, and plots are thrown about.

Scriptwriting: Writing of the story; who says & does what.

Storyboarding (The artist draws a sequence of the key moments in an animation)

Modeling

This is the creation of 3D objects that would fit into animation. This encompasses characters, props and backgrounds. The devil is in the detail for this one: models and elements must look believable within that world, which includes fitting into overarching themes

Key Techniques:

There are two types of surfaces: polygonal and subdivided surfaces. Polygonal Modeling (Tri-Meshes or Quad-mashid)Triangles: just as the name suggests, use triangles to define an object.

3D Sculpting: these create highly detailed models with less traditional shapes and are shaped more organically using fancy computerized tools.

NURBS Modeling: Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines model dynamical perpetuity surfaces.

Texturing

Now that the models have been created, it's time to start texturing! This is where we add colour and detail to make the surfaces feel special. They make models appear realistic by adding images (textures)

Key Steps:

UV Unwrapping: This flattens your 3D model onto a 2D plane so that textures can be placed on the correct spot.

Texture Painting: They use tools like Adobe Photoshop or Substance Painter to create and apply textures in their characters.

Material Creation: Basically, telling how materials should react

Rigging

Rigging creates a skeleton for 3D models, so animators can animate the object to move. The skeleton / rig includes bones & controllers that will determine how each model deforms (bends or stretches).

Key Steps:

Bones: Creating a structure to control the movement of your model.

Skinning: This is where they connect the model to this skeleton so that it moves properly with the character.

Manipulation Controls: a UI design for animators, Keeping the Rig user-friendly

Animation

The fun bit! How animators give animation to a moving character or object is determined by its movement or choice. In this stage, keyframe, adjust timing, and fine-tune motion until it looks real.

Key Techniques:

Keyframe Animation: Assigning Keyframes while software adds in-between (tween) frames.

Motion Capture: Record real-life movements and apply them to 3D models.

Procedural Animation, Animated Motion created with algorithms is most useful for motion in things like particles or physics-related animations.

Lighting

Lighting is also a key aspect that matters hugely in the art of 3D animation! It establishes the mood of a scene, shows off nice details, and makes everything look better. By great lighting, I mean that it makes a regular scene feel real.

Key Techniques:

The famous and versatile three-point lighting is included in the standard kit, which includes a key light, fill light, & backlight.

Conclusion

There are a lot of steps how is 3D animation created? Every step matters! I realize that, because its true, EVERY part of the animation cycle, from conception to rendering, matters when it comes to bringing a concept design-in this case, one based on reality animations. Animators Dora Relater & Dominik Horbańczuk go into detail about Stop Motion, which, when you understand how it all fits together, makes aspiring animators realise this is such a brilliant art form that can excise the additional fat in other animation mediums to create some amazing animations across Movies, Games and even Ads! 3D Animation Continues to Pioneer Digital Storytelling
